Trump Indicted in New York on Obstruction Charges
Indictment Unsealed Tuesday, Charges Stem from 2020 Election Investigation
Seven Counts Include Conspiracy to Obstruct, Willful Retention of National Defense Information
NEW YORK, June 9, 2023 - Former President Donald Trump was indicted Tuesday on seven counts related to his alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The indictment, unsealed by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, marks the culmination of a years-long investigation into Trump's actions following the election.
The charges against Trump include conspiracy to obstruct, willful retention of national defense information, and coercion in the first degree. Prosecutors allege that Trump conspired with others to prevent the counting of electoral votes on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to maintain his presidency.
The indictment also alleges that Trump unlawfully removed classified documents from the White House and stored them unsecured at his Mar-a-Lago residence. The document-handling charges carry a potential penalty of five years in prison.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has vowed to fight the charges. His attorneys have argued that the indictment is politically motivated and that Trump was exercising his First Amendment rights in his post-election conduct.
